Dark Skies
Join us for an evening of stargazing, learning, and enjoying Harpswell’s dark skies!
Harpswell Recreation and Harpswell Heritage Land Trust are partnering with the Southern Maine Astronomers (SMA) for a guided tour of the October night sky at Mitchell Field on Saturday, October 10.
Program arrival begins at 6:00 PM, with programs starting at 6:30 PM. We’ll kick things off with an introduction to dark skies, simple ways to reduce light pollution at home, and an introduction to the citizen science project Globe at Night.
Once the sky is dark enough, SMA will offer views through a variety of telescopes and lead a laser-pointer tour of visible constellations.
Dress warmly, and please bring only red-light flashlights.
You don’t need to stay for the entire program—feel free to come for as long as you’d like and stay to stargaze until 9:00 PM.
If you arrive after dark, please park up in the trailer parking lot (the horseshoe gravel lot) so that headlights don’t interfere with the stargazing.
We encourage you to RSVP to help us keep track of attendance, but last-minute guests and friends are always welcome!
