COME GROW WITH US
Would you like to grow vegetables but lack enough space or sunlight? At Harpswell Community Garden you’ll find plenty of both, plus other important resources needed for healthy, productive plants. It’s also a great place to meet and enjoy the company of fellow gardeners.
The Community Garden is located at Mitchell Field off Route 123. This town-owned property features several miles of gravel and paved paths, a Middle Bay shoreline with sandy beach and picnic tables, and a bandstand where weekly concerts are held in summer months. An ice cream stand and food truck are located at the entrance of the property.
25 plots are rented to individuals, families and groups to organically grow food and flowers for their own use. Residents of Harpswell are given priority but surplus plots may be rented to non-residents. An additional portion has been set aside for a volunteer-tended 'Common Good Garden' where harvested produce is donated to local non-profit organizations that help feed those in need.
A major improvement program to provide a reliable watering system was completed in the summer of 2018. The original well was dug deeper to feed two 275-gallon water storage tanks, which supply spigots conveniently located throughout the garden. Deer-proof fencing is installed along the perimeter and a locked storage shed holds communal tools and wheelbarrows. Gardeners may keep the same plot year after year, and high quality compost is purchased each season for top dressing. Families are welcomed; picnic tables and a play area with climbing frame and sandbox will keep the kids busy. There are also communal herb beds for the use of gardeners.
How it Works
The Community Garden is a collaborative effort, and all gardeners are encouraged to be ‘good neighbors’ by keeping their plots weeded, harvested, and in general good condition. Please see Member Guidelines for more details.
Because plot fees and other funding don’t provide for paid staff, administrative and maintenance tasks must be done by volunteers. For that reason, all gardeners are asked to contribute at least six hours of work throughout the season. This might involve mowing, helping out in the Common Good Garden or other areas of general upkeep. Work days are usually scheduled three times each year and are a good opportunity to meet other gardeners. We also welcome volunteers who wish to be involved, but don't desire the responsibilities that come with renting a plot.
Two plot sizes are available:
10' x 10' for $25*
10' x 15' for $35*
*Recommended fees: a lesser amount that fits your budget may be paid. Please contact Judith or Gina before payment if you are choosing a lesser amount.
